HISTORY OF THE BORT MOUNTAIN LODGE!
Enjoy nature and the alpine summer.
1945 - 1947
Construction of the Firstbahn
The Firstbahn with transverse travelling seats was built in 1945. A pioneering achievement at that time! At the same time, a barrack was erected by the company Losinger at Bort to provide catering for the workers during the construction of the intermediate station Bort. The barrack was managed by Marie Brawand, the daughter of Friedrich Brawand and her husband Albert Schlunegger.
Construction of the Bort mountain restaurant
The construction of the Firstbahn led to increased demand for better catering. Showcasing great innovative spirit, Friedrich Brawand-Schwab, who had also laid the foundations of today’s Hotel Kirchbühl in 1900, built the Bort mountain restaurant. In those days, such projects would normally be realized by the cableway companies themselves. From then on, daughter Marie Schlunegger-Brawand and her husband Albert Schlunegger managed their own business – another milestone in the history of the Brawand family.
1947 - 1972
Pioneering spirits Albert and Marie Schlunegger-Brawand
Marie and Albert Schlunegger-Brawand managed Bort with great passion and charm from 1947 until the end of the winter season of 1972.
The reputation of Marie’s delicious Bort-Rösti stretches as far as Basle! Bort was home to Albert, Marie and their son Albert. In winter, Albert junior would go to school on wooden skis. Practice makes perfect - Albert later became a member of the Swiss national Ski Federation!
Bort mountain lodge expansion
When the chair lift was replaced by a new 6-seater cableway, the need for a larger restaurant and hotel arose. Albert junior and Annemarie Schlunegger-Hinnen carried out the largest reconstruction of the restaurant and hotel business since the lodge’s existence. This was in order to meet the growing capacities as a result of the planned cableway construction. In addition, the hosts were also able to move into their very own and well-deserved flat - up until then they had lived in a modest room on the guest floor!
Changing hands - Bort stays in the family
Albert Schlunegger-Hinnen sold Bort mountain lodge to his cousin Christian Brawand-Imboden. Albert and Christian are both grandchildren of the founder father Friedrich Brawand-Schwab. Thus, it was ensured that the business remained in traditional family ownership. Son Ben Brawand had managed the business from December 1992 until, at the end of 1995, he emigrated to America with his partner Christine Kaufmann and since then has successfully held a managerial position at a food convention centre in Salt Lake City UT. From 1996 until October 2005, the operational management of Bort mountain lodge was assumed by Hotel Kirchbühl. The business experienced highs and lows. It proved rather difficult to manage the business locally and build on earlier successes.

From December 2005
Bruno Brawand - grandchild of Friedrich Brawand-Schwab - and Claudia Dannhorn bought Bort mountain lodge from the family and have since then carried out extensive renovation works. No stone remained unturned, and today, the hotel, which since has become a three-star rated hotel, finds itself in outstanding condition.

Switzerland’s most beautiful mountain restaurant
The Bort mountain lodge adorns the cover of the book “Switzerland’s most beautiful ski hut restaurants and mountain restaurants” published by Werd in December 2016.
Another milestone in the history of Bort and major recognition for the work done and the continuous development of Alpine Hotel Bort since 1947!
